Westwind Forest Stewardship Inc. is a community-based, not-for-profit company. As the only not-for-profit SFL company in Ontario, we do not have shareholders and we cover our costs every year with no outstanding debt. We do not harvest timber — as the licence holder, we plan and direct forestry in the French Severn forest.
As a community-based company, Westwind’s local Board members engage directly with our partners in building this community.
Our community-based Board has 8 positions – 4 independent, 3 forest industry, and one Indigenous. All of our Board members bring business skills and a broad perspective to steering this small company. The forest industry members have a detailed knowledge of the challenges that loggers and mill owners face. The three industry members are chosen (one each) from independent loggers, the largest allocation holder (Tembec), and other mills in the area. The Indigenous representative is recommended by the Chiefs and Councils of the First Nations in the forest.
