Forest Management Planning Process

A Forest Management Plan (FMP)  has a number of key components. They are:

Development of the Long Term Management Direction: This component starts with the forest inventory and ultimately identifies the level of harvest by forest type (i.e. the 10-year allowable cut). This work is done with models that take into account a variety of forest growth and silvicultural assumptions as well as social, ecological and economic management objectives.  This strategic direction projects how the forest will develop 100+ years into the future.

The next component of a FMP is Operational Planning. This includes specifically:

The final component of a FMP describes the Monitoring element of a plan – both silvicultural effectiveness monitoring (is the forest developing as expected) as well as compliance monitoring (are the rules being followed).

In addition to developing a 10-year Forest Management Westwind must prepare an Annual Plan each year called an Annual Work Schedule which is essentially a subset of the 10-year plan.  Westwind also creates Annual Reports summarizing activities from the following  years and in some specified years, doing an in-depth analysis of trends over the course of the 10-year plan to date.
