Forest Management Plans are a legal requirement under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act in Ontario to allow the following activities on Crown land forests: harvesting, road construction and maintenance, renewal activities such as planting and tending activities such as thinning. Without an approved plan, these activities cannot occur.
Forest management within the French/Severn Forest is currently being undertaken through the 2009-2019 Forest Management Plan (FMP) but the development of the next FMP (2019-2029) has already begun.
A Forest Management Plan is written and certified by the Plan Author who is a Registered Professional Forester working for Westwind. However, the FMP is the product of an interdisciplinary planning team with Westwind staff, MNRF district and regional staff including foresters and biologists, the Chair of the LCC, an industry representative, and Aboriginal members from local communities. The Plan is endorsed by the MNRF District Manager and approved by the MNRF Regional Director.
