Talking About Forestry
Today, our forester intern, Margaret Scott, was at Northern Wilderness Outfitters teaching a grade 12 class about forestry and tree identification. The group learned about silviculture systems, tree marking, protecting wildlife habitat, forest management planning, and possible career paths in forestry. The presentation was followed by a tree identification walk where the class identified over 10 species of trees. They were even up to the challenge of identifying deciduous trees without leaves using characteristics of the bark, branching, and/or buds.
The students were part of the Environmental Leadership Program at East Elgin Secondary School and asked many fantastic questions by the end of the morning. A special thanks to Duncan Sinclair for the invitation and to Northern Wilderness Outfitters for their hospitality. Hopefully there are some future forestry professionals among this great group!
